26. Stone Temples
* * *
Five small hills dotted the vacant landscape in the southern part of the Kadal Mallai Island. Hundreds of sculptors were working on three of those hills. They were sculpting each of the hills into a temple.
The pillars of the front hall of one temple were being chiseled, while the tower of the second temple was being carved. Sculptors had just commenced sculpting a temple out of the third hill.
Rows of sheds had been erected to house the sculptors and workmen.
The tall trees and lush green creepers that surrounded Aayanar’s forest residence were not seen in this province. The terrain was sandy towards the north. Beyond this, the ebb and flow of the white frothy waves was seen sporadically. Towards the south and west, small rocks and bushes lay scattered across a great distance.
But the scene towards the north and north west was very different. There were tall buildings that grazed the sky and lean coconut trees that grew between the buildings. Beyond the buildings, the Rishabha flags hoisted atop the masts of hundreds of ships were fluttering in the breeze.
At the centre of the location where the sculpture works were being carried out, stood a majestic stone elephant.
The Chakravarthy and his son who came on elephants alighted and stood near the stone elephant. Attendants held a wide white canopy over them to protect them from the sun.
Mahendra Chakravarthy and his son stood at the same spot and in the same fashion as they had seven years ago. But then, the hills and rocks had been bare.
“Appa! Look at this rock’s shadow! Doesn’t it look like an elephant?” asked the heir of the Pallava Dynasty, Narasimha Varman.
The Chakravarthy saw the shadow Narasimha Varman pointed out.
“Ah!” he exclaimed in surprise. Several indescribable emotions resonated in that exclamation.
For some time, Mahendrar was immersed in deep thought and lost consciousness of the outside world. Then he hugged Narasimhar and said, “My child! You have discovered and articulated an amazing fact. You do not realize the worth of your words.”
Narasimhan, who was a twelve-year-old boy, continued even more enthusiastically, “Appa, doesn’t the shadow of that hill resemble a temple?”
“Yes, Narasimha. Yes. The shadow of that hill does resemble a temple. We will make a temple out of it. We will make five temples out of these five hills. We will create an elephant, a lion and Nandi out of the smaller rocks. We will convert this harbour into a dream world. We will create sculptures that will astound the people who visit this harbour even after a thousand years,” said Mahendrar.
Soon, several sculptors armed with their tools arrived in that province. They began working on the hills and rocks. A place which had been calm till then resounded with the “kal kal” sound of the chisels wielded by hundreds of sculptors.
Hearing the noise, the tiny rabbits which lived in the bushes came out. With raised ears, they watched what was going on. They then fled that place.
The sculpting which commenced then, continued to this date.
